Shinji Ikari first appears in the initial episode of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is a fourteen-year-old boy burdened with piloting a giant biomechanical weapon called an EVA, specifically EVA-01.
Abandoned by his father, Gendo Ikari, at a young age, Shinji suffers from deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and isolation. He is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father, who is the commander of NERV, a special agency tasked with defending humanity from beings known as Angels.
Reluctantly, Shinji accepts his role as an EVA pilot, driven by a desire for his father's approval and a fear of disappointing others.
